History of Thai Boxing
Muaythai has been a part of Thai history since time immemorial but it is only since the Sukothai period (ending in 1767 AD) that we have a written and clear record of the sport.
The Sukothai era last about 140 years. Evidence inscribed in stone pillars in the area tells eloquently of the many wars fought by this material empire. Muaythai had a very practical purpose at this time and was further developed to aid soldiers when their weapons were broken or taken from them.
After the time of war, Muaythai became popular as a means of showing your prowess in battle and keeping battle-ready. School such as Samakorn Training Centre in Lopburi grew up. Some were in temple areas and the students were taught by monks. Displays of skill took place outdoors with the ring simply marked by the spectators. They either stood or sat to mark an area of about 20 meters.
