GREETINGS FROM PHUKET

The resort has a bar and a main Restaurant near the pool, Room Service, a
Pizza Shop, a swimming pool with kids pool and Jacuzzi. Most striking feature is
a Sauna – not in terms of use but location. |
The facility’s bright-brown door
shines right beside the terrace of the main restaurant; as though it is part of the
outlet. It’s probably the worst of all facility-show-off I’ve seen in a hotel. Makes
you wonder who would expose their body to the heat in the wooden cubicle
while, just a meter away, diners would work on a piece of sizzling meat. Let’s
hope that there is a creative F&B Manager who can come up with a hot dining
promotion.
I do hope that the hotel will take the chance to upgrade some of the general
public facilities – the lobby, reception, restrooms and the restaurants.

Patong cottage When I heard the name the first
time I thought that Patong Cottage invokes a lovely, romantic seaside
setting – thatched roofed cottages amidst gently swaying palm trees,
baked in sunshine and garnished with a breeze and sounds from the
sea. Little did I know that I would soon hope for the help of Sherpa
Tensing with my ascent to the mountains in Patong’s backyard.
The 45 room property is located on the Nanai Road side of Patong
Beach, high up on the hill, overlooking town and sea.
Most rooms are of Deluxe type and located in 2-3 story buildings.
The property has – true to its name - indeed some cottages, 17 all in
all. Apart from decoration and color scheme, these only differ from
the 28 Deluxe Rooms in that they have shower only (whereas Deluxe
Rooms have bathtub/shower). Cottage rooms are actually quite nice
while Deluxe Rooms look a bit pale.

All rooms are air-conditioned, feature tiled floor, IDD phone, cable television
with a host of channels in numerous languages, mini-bar, tea and coffee maker,
hair dryer, balcony/terrace, safety box and an umbrella. Workers were busily
applying the final touch up to rooms and exterior in order to be ready for the
high season.
Whereas some rooms my have views obstructed by trees, most guests get stunning
views of Patong and the sea.
Moving within the hotel does not require mountaineering skills, but it helps if
you are fit to walk stairs. All public places, including the restaurant and swimming
pools, are only accessible via staircase.
I have always thought of the Nanai area – as far away as it is from busy Patong
Beach - as a place most suitable for people in hiding. Patong Cottage, however,
taught me that it is very well possible to use the hill as a relaxing, more quiet
and less commercial retreat and yet having the chance to indulge in dining and
entertainment found along Nanai Road or in downtown Patong. Most of the
property’s guests are honeymooners and younger to middle aged couples –
indeed your garden variety clientele.
The hotel offers free shuttle bus services to Patong Beach (Ocean Plaza near
Patong Merlin) starting 10.00 with trips every 2 hours until 21.00.
There is one restaurant (Cottage View Restaurant) offering nice views of Patong.
The hotel has a swimming pool with a bar.

Ramada karon resort The Felix Karon Resort
was sold and is reopening as the Ramada Resort, Karon Beach,
Phuket, in mid-December. The property is obviously still located in
that corner in north Karon, and it still has the same layout – but the
new owners have brought in a number of welcome and promising
improvements. Most of the 121 rooms will soon have been renovated;
all with a new modern and at times “minimalistic” touch,
called the “Mexican Hacienda” design concept. The Ramada Karon is
a family themed resort which is set to become the island’s leading
property for family vacations. While the Deluxe Rooms (19 Pool View,
63 Ocean View) are sporting more a comfortable standard-issue
room design, there are 10 kids adventure rooms with three different
themes: The Spaceship Room, The Castle Room and the Underwater |
