GREETINGS FROM PHUKET

The resort has 105 rooms and I started with the second highest room-category (since closest to the reception), a Deluxe Villa
Jacuzzi (48 sq.m., title picture). This villa is surrounded by a wall to provide privacy and features a day bed, satellite TV, minibar,
tea and coffee maker, in-room safe, separate shower and Jacuzzi bathtub. There’s a good hint of Asian design on one side
of the room – this, however, is unfortunately lost on the opposite side. There’s a very small TV set in a remote corner and a
table with two chairs. This side of the room looks uninspired; it’s as though somebody creative and talented started off and
then, half-way into the job, handed over to another person who only had experience in building hostels. |
We then walked through the property towards a double line of two storey buildings
housing a total of 55 Deluxe Pavilion Rooms. This room type has shower in
the bathtub and most if not all of the previously mentioned amenities – and
none of the Asian touch. The absence of a balcony was most striking. With all
the empty and unused space you have in the room, you wonder what the designer
had thought – if there’s been any thought given to nice evenings in quiet
fresh air?
Next room was one of the 7 Pavilion Suites. This room is bigger and therefore
emptier – and only with hints of Bali/Thai design. Shower bathtub combined.
You could hold aerobic classes in one corner of the rooms and still have enough
empty space for Petanque practice on the other side.
I then saw one of the 3 Royal Villas. Here you have separate shower and bathtub,
more space and obviously more of the above-mentioned short-comings.
Some of the windows provide views to walls of adjacent buildings.
When we walked back to the entrance I learned that there are 28 Superior
Rooms occupying the upper floors of the shop houses. Interesting enough, this
room type – overlooking the car park and the resort’s main building, features a
small balcony. Superior Rooms have shower only. The 14 Superior Rooms (on
the second floor) have only one bedroom while the 14 Superior Pavilion Rooms
(on top floor) have an additional living room (although so scarcely furnished it
looks more like a storage chamber).
The resort has one restaurant, a pool bar, a pool with Jacuzzi and a Spa.
While guests may enjoy a nice stay in this clean and relaxing environment, I felt
that with a bit more attention to detail (and the conceptual promise in mind) a
lot more could have been achieved. |

Patong paragon hotel Just south of the Novotel
Phuket Resort is the newly opened Patong Paragon Hotel (in the corner
where you either turn right to get to the Novotel or left towards
Patong Beach). Set to open in early November, the property looked
readier for business than any other property 10 days before softopening.
The hotel has 114 rooms and 7 suites set in various four-storey buildings
surrounding a large pool area. There are 83 Deluxe Rooms with
Poolview (53 sq.m.) – most with pool view and 19 Deluxe Rooms
facing outwards to provide sea view.
There are a few Pool Access Rooms (53 sq.m.) with basically the
same design and amenities but with the added advantage of being
able to hop into the pool from your very own room.
All rooms are rather elegantly and comfortably

furnished and have tiled floor, are air-conditioned and feature either king size or twin beds, wired and wireless high speed internet access, two-line desk phone with conference speaker and fax/modem connections, satellite television, bathroom with separate shower and bathtub, hair dryer, mini-bar, tea and coffee maker, in-room safe and a balcony. 44 rooms are connected. Maximum number of persons per room is 3.
There are Junior Suites (106 sq.m.) and a Presidential Ocean View Suite (106
sq.m.) – I haven’t been able to see them and thus won’t comment.
The Patong Paragon Hotel has The Paragon Caf? (poolside), a Seafood & Pub
Restaurant, a Pool Bar as well as the Paragon Lounge.
I have already mentioned the swimming pool; it features three large islands
with tropical plants and space to relax. There is also a separate kids pool. The
hotel has a fitness studio, a spa (to open soon) and meeting/function rooms.
