Many months have passed since my last report from Phuket. Not that there wouldn’t have been any noteworthy development. It’s also not that writer’s block had kicked in, as for having this one would have to be a writer in the first place. And there is plenty to write about. But perhaps it’s just difficult or useless (?) to report on
something gone half-way through the process of completion, knowing that you have old news the moment you leave the property. You postpone to the last moment, closer to any opening deadline hotels have set,only to find that what you are finally visiting is still a construction site days and weeks after the targeted soft opening dates. Rain was a very loyal and strong companion through most of the mid-year. This does not make for good picture-taking; after all, images should stimulate appetite for the destination. |

And then there was the moving of our branch office,preparations for what promised a successful high season and assorted other excuses that kept me from bringing updates to you. But here we are! Driving along Phuket’s beaches, you might indeed find you are enjoying a journey through paradise. Ok, Patong Beach looks busier than ever before (although some decent upgrading/decorating work was has been carried out in the past year). But if you happen to be in Karon, Kata or Kata Noi in the morning hours of a sunny day, you’d surely hope that it’s not a hotel inspection which had brought you here but a good book, a couple of cooling beverages and many hours of lazing along the shores. As for hotel inspections, let’s see….. |
Indigo Pearl We all know that the Pearl Village is history and that guests visiting the premises are now to get the Indigo Pearl experience. The narrow road leading to the hotel is an indicator that big business is about to land here, for there are a few more shop houses and bungalow resorts lining the street now. The first statement that Indigo Pearl has nothing to do with the old Village is found in the lobby. Dark colors and mechanical exhibits (some of which might soon be available in jewelry form) set the tone. A visitor may do well knowing in advance that the Indigo Pearl's architecture is inspired by Phuket's (and the owning family's) tin mining past. A few things have changed with the room design since my last visit in January this year.
