Phuket Town :

While most visitors think of Phuket in terms of beaches, the island also has a fascinting and attractive commercial heart - Phuket Town, with a population under 100,000. The town is an easy-going blend of the historic and the modern, and of Thai, Chines and Muslim influences. It's backstreets are lined with old shophouses that are virtual museums of old Chinese traditions. Open-air street bazaars are a fascinating jumble of orientalia. Temples come in Thai and Chinese styles, interspersed with animist shrines and mosqes. While most hotels locate themselves on the beaches, there are a few good quality establishments within the town itself which offer the visitor an entirely different programme.
