Thailand's long waited transportation project is finally on board.
The State Railway of Thailand, the owner of the airport link, announced that Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (SARL) was ready for the official opening ceremony which would be held on 5th December 2009.
Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link is a new, 28.6 kilometer long elevated railway which connects Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Bangkok city areas.
Makkasan Station, in Makkasan area of Bangkok, is developed as the main station for the airport link. It will work as City Air Terminal accommodating check-in facilities at the station. Makkasan Station is connected to MRT Petchburi Station. And there is also a plan to connect it to BTS Phayathai Station in the future, making it more convenient for international tourists to travel around the city of Bangkok.
According to The State Railway of Thailand, there will be two different services available on this route. One is called Suvarnabhumi Airport Express. This is a “non-stop” service which connects the airport and Makkasan station directly without stopping at any other stations. Another one is called Suvarnabhumi Airport City Line and it stops at six local stations along the line.
With the Express line, it only takes 15 minutes from the airport to Makkasan Station. And with the City line, it is expected to take approximately 28 minutes to the city center of Bangkok.
Suvarnabhumi Airport Railway Link has successfully completed its first trial run with passengers on 7th October 2009, building confidence in its up-coming opening ceremony. It will continue trial runs until its commercial launch, which is expected to be around April next year.
