Thailand Situation Update

January 15, 2009

Thailand remains the Brits' first-choice holiday destination.

Thailand has been considered as the destination offering the most value-for-money for British holidaymakers, according to a report in the Telegraph Newspaper. The UK Post Office's Holiday Costs Barometer Survey was released to reveal Thailand and South Africa as the countries where the pound would stretch furthest, with Malaysia and Kenya also offering excellent value for family holidays.

The findings are indeed surprising in view of the recent strengthening of the Thai baht against the British pound. Twelve months ago, the sterling currency went down sharply from approximately 65 baht a pound to 53 baht as of today. However, Thailand still has the lowest living costs for tourists in a survey of 15 long-haul destinations. "Despite its recent troubles, Thailand remains a great prospect for UK holidaymakers. The Thai baht may have strengthened against sterling but prices remain very low in the country and the discounts now available to top resorts like Phuket and Hua Hin will make Thailand unbeatable value," Andrew Spice of Post Office Travel Services was quoted saying.
