Bangkok - State of Emergency lifted.

April 27, 2009

Yesterday, Thai Premier, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has lifted a two-week-old state of emergency in Bangkok and surrounding areas. After weeks of anti government protests led by the "red shirts", the decision is aimed at finding solution for the country.

"The government wants to show its sincerity, that the government wants reconciliation and to make the country move forwards," said Mr. Abhisit.

Abhisit announced Bangkok's state of emergency including five surrounding provinces on April 12 after protesters demonstrations spread to the capital. The anti government demonstration disrupted a mid month summit of Asian leaders in the coastal city of Pattaya. Some troops would remain on the streets.

All roads in Bangkok open to traffic. The BTS SkyTrain, MRT subway services, public utilities and communication services also operate uninterrupted. Other travel-related infrastructures and services including all airports, train services, roadways operate as normal.

Hotels and tourist attractions, including major shopping centers open on a normal schedule.
