Travel Safely in Bangkok - Thailand Situation Update

Asking for the house dissolution and call for new elections, Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) started anti-government rallies from March 12, 2010. The protest has been peaceful so far and limited to the certain protest sites such as Ratchadamnoen Nok and Ratchadamnoen Klang.

As a latest update of March 15, 2010, the leader of UDD has announced that the group of protesters would head to the 11th Intantry Regiment in Bang Khen district, Bangkok, although the main protest site still remains at Phan Fa Bridge on Ratchadamnoen Avenue. There has been no injuries or violent actions reported so far from the anti-government rallies.

The BTS SkyTrain, MRT subway services, public utilities and communication services operate uninterrupted. Other travel-related infrastructures and services including train services, Suvarnabhumi Bangkok Airport and all the other airports in Thailand also operate as normal. The main shopping centres, tourist attractions and hotels in town are open as usual.

The government insists that overseas tourists and foreign nationals in Thailand have not been targeted in the on-going political conflicts. To avoid any unforeseen circumstances, tourists are advised to avoid the protest sites and wearing red coloured shirts which are the symbol of the anti-government group.
