Bangkok Situation Update
November 27, 2008
Bangkok Don Muang Airport is ordered to close just over a day after the closure of Thailand’s main International hub.
On the night of 25 November, People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters forced Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to suspend outbound flights where they jammed the entry to the passenger terminal. Inbound flights were still being allowed to land at the airport. Up till now, airlines must make their own decision on flight arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Some flights can be diverted to other key airports such as the U-Tapao Airport in Chonburi if situations deteriorated.
Supporters of the PAD swarmed the old Don Muang Airport late Wednesday forcing all services at the airport to cancel at about midnight. Up till now, the PAD refused to leave neither Suvarnabhumi nor Don Muang.
All Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia's inbound and outbound flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Muang Airport are suspended indefinitely until the airport resumes normal operations.
Central Bangkok:
The anti-government rally is still taking place at the designated protest site and the immediate areas. Tourists in Bangkok should avoid travelling to areas near the demonstration site including the Government House, the Parliament Building and its vicinity. The protests are directed at Members of Parliament and other political figures. These incidents are limited to the administrative centre of Bangkok.
For sightseeing around Rattanakosin Island, visitors can easily take shuttle boats and river taxis along the Chao Phraya. All other major tourist attractions and shopping districts in Bangkok, and nationwide, are unaffected. Life in the capital and the rest of the Kingdom continues as normal.
Foreign nationals are unaffected.
Except Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airports, hotels and other travel-related infrastructure and services including the rest of Thailand airports, all rail services and roadways operate as normal. Only certain roads around the Government House area remains closed. Traffic delays towards Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road and Suvarnabhumi Airport may occur - a road journey to related areas must be planned carefully.
