The Pahurat district is Bangkok’s Little India, centre of the Indian community, who are mostly Sikh and the capital’s largest fabric market in Bangkok. If you want to buy Thai textiles this is the place to visit. The choice is vast so don’t be in any hurry to buy, although you will be sure to get many offers. Take you time and check out at least a dozen before making a purchase. The area extends along Chakrawat Road and farther ahead along Sampeng Lane. While on the other side of Chakrawat Road there are many gem, jewellery and fabric shops. Visiting the market is a journey of discovery to tastes, smells and sights as if you had actually travelled to India. The majority of the merchants sell all varieties of cloth and clothing. Ornate Indian jewellery and accessories, such as sandals, abound in this market place. Neighbouring restaurants provide tastes and nibbles of Indian cuisine. But if you are just looking for a snack there are plenty of street vendors offering authentic and fragrant Indian foods. If you are into good Indian food then head for Chakraphet Road. It is well known for its Indian restaurants and shops selling Indian sweets wrapped in edible silver, they are so sweet and delicious. One of the best in the area is Royal India Restaurant, specializing in north Indian cuisine with a tasty selection of Indian breads such as Naan and Tandoori Roti. On the opposite side the road you will find a Chinese temple. North of this temple, in a back alley is the second largest Sikh outside of India. Visitors are welcome but they must remove their shoes and cover their head before entering the temple. The easiest way to reach Pahurat is to take a river express boat Tha Saphaan Phut, which is just to the northwest of Phra Phut Yot Fa (Memorial) Bridge. Once you get off the boat its an easy short walk to the market.
