The
loop via Mae Hong Son takes you on a route through spectacular
mountainous territory occupied by four distinct hill tribes.
The provincial capital of Mae Hong Son is a city dominated by
the Shan, making the province seem like a different country.
Two
days (minimum) are required to drive round the loop, with one
night stop over in Mae Hong Son.
To
have enough time to go on a few of the recommended side-trips
in this web site will require at least three overnight stays.
Some of the smaller, more local places to stay on the way may
offer less comfort but more adventure.
The tour, which has been divided into four days, is as flexible
as you wish to make it, so choose what you think may interest
you and explore for yourself. The main route is described and
suggestions are given for side-trips and alternative routes.
Accommodation
at three levels is listed, but prices vary greatly according
to season. In the high season (December though February), advance
booking is advisable. Finally, some important information about
driving on and off road on the Mae Hong Son Loop is found in
the safety tips section.
